I am about to prepare myself for my first test.  I am doing Dev. Life Span Psych first, I was about to sign up with TCN but from reading here I am having second thoughts.  I think  my new plan is to try and purchase the study guide from ebay.  My question is this ... ->  Do most ppl just use the study guides?  I only know one person that has went through this program and she only did the study guides provided by RUE.  I don't want to sell myself short here, but if the study guide is all it takes I definately want to go that way.  I just want some feedback as to what others have done.  Thanks So Much!!

Hi Michelle! Welcome to the forum. Some people do use only the study guides. For the Nursing Concepts tests, I also purchased one of the recommended texts -- Kozier's "Fundamentals of Nursing." Got it used for $13. After I took NC1 using just the Chancellor's study guide, I realized that the study guide was pretty condensed and didn't cover absolutely everything. I'm one of those really "detail oriented" students, so I decided I wanted a little more in-depth information for my next test. What works for me is to read the study guide, take one of the EC practice tests, then do supplemental studying from the text before taking the second EC practice test.

It's going to also depend on you -- how you like to study, what your current level of knowledge is, that kind of thing.

Hey Lisa, Thanks! I am so glad I found this place   I am clueless as to what I am doing!! LOL Psych will be my first "class" I have no clue about nothing.  I think I am just going to bypass TCN and try my luck buying the study guides on Ebay first and see how I do.  I don't know anything...as far as scheduling for test or anything.  I have to take Psych, A&P, Micro, NC1, NC3-7 and that's the test I need   I am nervous! and anxious all tied up into one.  I understand you don't have to enroll at Excelsior until later, but I didn't know that and already registered (oh well)  I hope they will be helpful How do you do practice test from EC?  like I said I am clueless! Thanks in Advance!

Registering for both the actual exam and the practice exams is done through the EC website. You can register for a practice exam only after you've paid for the actual exam -- i.e., if you pay for the NC1 exam, you can register for the NC1 practice exam. The practice exams cost $60, and you get two tests -- each with 100 questions. You take those online on the EC website (unlike the actual exams, done at Pearson testing centers). The practice tests are called "Form A" and "Form B," and you have to take Form A first. When you're done with the test, it gives you the rationales for both the correct and incorrect answers, which is really helpful. Each question also tells you which area it's from in the exam (like for NC1, the sections are Nursing Process, Health and Wellness, Med Safety, etc.) so you can determine where you need to do additional studying. I find them to be very useful!

Honestly I'm not sure if there's a practice test for Life Span ... I'm planning on taking the Lifespan version of the CLEP test, called Human Growth and Development -- it's a lot less expensive than the EC test! $65 instead of $200-whatever. If you haven't already paid for Lifespan through EC, it might be something to consider.

I paid my enrollment fee before I did NC1. I didn't know any better. So don't feel bad!

I wouldn't sign a contract with TCN ... they are a very expensive and unnecessary middleman!

Thanks ! u are a great help Maybe you could be the spokesperson for EC (LOL) I think I may just do what you recommended for the life span I have not paid for that yet...is there a study guide anywhere for the Human Growth & Dev ?

Let me give you a YahooGroup to join, and once there, you can find what is essentially the Chancellor's study guide in the group's files:

Once you join and have access to the group, under the "files" section of the group (you'll see the link on the left-hand side of that page I gave you), you'll find a folder called "Life span." There are files called "Life Span Unit 1.doc" through "Life Span Unit 10.doc" -- one of the members of the mailing list said recently that those files are essentially the same as the Chancellor's guide to Life Span. I think studying the Life Span materials will enable you to easily pass the CLEP test.

That Yahoo mailing list is also an excellent resource in itself -- lots of helpful people on there.

Another good resource for CLEP materials is REA -- http://www.rea.com/clep/index.cfm -- they make relatively inexpensive study guides for all the CLEP tests.

I'm not sure about being a spokesperson, but I love studying on my own and I'm good at researching things online. I also enjoying sharing helpful information with others ... I don't like seeing people getting sucked into contracts with publishing companies when EC is very specific in that they do NOT have a relationship with those companies, and it seems like people are under the impression that once they pay these publishing companies, they don't have to pay EC ... not true!! Arrrgh.

Lisa thanks for all the info! I have a question that you might be able to answer    Do you know if the Humanities Clep will count for the 6 humanties credits needed?  if so I'm definately going that route Thanks again! You've been a great help!!

That one I'm not sure about ... EC accepted all my Humanities credits from my 1991 AA degree, so I didn't have to ask about those! I'd email EC -- they're usually really good about getting back to you on stuff like that. Good grief, I cannot type after 12 hours in the ED, I'm wearing out the backspace key ...

They answered me the same day when I emailed them about Human Growth and Development, and Sociology. She also mentioned in the email that when you take a CLEP test, be sure to specify that the results are to go to Excelsior College, or CLEP will charge you a fee later to send a transcript. Also, they're pass/fail exams, so they don't affect your GPA (I guess that could be good OR bad, ha ha!).
