Hi,
I am just wondering how most of you prepared for the CPNE... I have taken a workshop, and I have Rob's DVD, and Lisa's.. I am also planning on attending another workshop to get more hands on practice and critiquing...I am finding it difficult in applying pneumonics. How did you use pneumonics in your preparation? And, did you have a grid? Do you have any great resources available? Thanks to all who leave feedback...

I used mnemonics to make sure I covered all the critical elements for each area of care, in practice and in charting. However, not everyone "clicks" with mnemonics. One friend of mine just knew each area of care, period -- no mnemonics. Everyone learns a little differently. Also, another factor is the mnemonics that you use -- I liked mine to be one word (even if it was kind of a nonsense word), rather than a sentence or phrase made created from the critical elements. And sometimes it's best to create your own mnemonics if the ones you're using aren't sticking.

Lisa,
Thank you for your response. Would you care to share the pneumonics you found helpful? I just want to learn from others who have been through this process..as much as possible... The guide is soo much to digest.. But, the workshop helped in that area pin pointing all the paper work that will be used ...I am starting to understand the careplans.. Is there an easy way to make the careplan book more user friendly? Thanks.

There is a good document to download here:

I got the mnemonics I used from a non-EC workshop, so I really can't share them. Sorry!

Kayyolan,
Sheri Taylor offers a great (ON-LINE) workshop!!! I have been using it myself! Do a google for cpne, and it should come up. I hope this helps!

I find that mneunomics work well for the grid "brain dump" but I would not rely on them during actual clinics.  I prefer to work with paper and checklists when I am actually being tested.  The reason for this is that when things change during a patient interaction (ie when the patient vomits on you halfway though your "SCAB") then it is hard to remember where you left off and start over.

With a checklist and grid, you can simply tick off the things that you have done and a quick glance tells you what needs to happen.
