California Paramedics
«

I am a Paramedic in CA, and have just recently resumed my studies after a period of absence. When I was last active w/ Excelsior, there was a dispute w/ the CA State Board of Registered Nursing about continuing to allow Excelsior grads to be licensed in the state. At that time, the issue had not yet been resolved, but I was told by both Excelsior and the CA BRN that I didn't need to worry, that even if the regs. changed I would be "grandfathered" in, as long as I was enrolled before the change. I am now seeing posts in forums that concern me. They range from "You will never get licensed in CA" to "You can, but you will have to put in 1,000 supervised clinical hours", to "Don't worry, you are not affected because you enrolled before the change.". Does ANYONE out there know the REAL info on getting licensed in CA?? I would appreciate ANY information! Thanks, Rick

I'm really not sure of the particulars, but I was under the impression that CA isn't accepting any EC grads. Your best bet is to contact EC directly ... they'll probably have the most accurate answer.

Thanks Lisa! That is not really what I wanted to hear, but I am afraid that may be the case.
I have contacted both Excelsior and the CA BRN regarding the issue, and am waiting to hear back from them, hopefully on Monday. I will post what I find out here, for anyone that is interested. I would hate to have done all this work for nothing! Anyway, thanks for the info Lisa, and good luck with your studies.

GOOD NEWS! I heard back from Excelsior, and since I enrolled before the deadline, I can still test for the CA BRN as long as I stay enrolled and graduate before 2010! (I can do that!) . I can breathe easier now!

Thanks Lisa! Sometimes I need some one to " crack the whip " to keep me on track! I still need a Soc. class, which I am currently taking, then all of the Nursing Core courses. I hope that I can get through them as quickly as you are! I plan on testing for NC1 next month. Thanks for the feedback, any help would be appreciated!

Pablo, Hi! Here is the info. that I have obtained, I can not confirm it's accuracy. Excelsior has told me that the CA BRN will no longer licence Paramedic to RN Excelsior grads. , unless you were enrolled before their deadline, which I believe was about 1 yr. ago. I do not know of any other MICP to RN programs in CA. I have heard that you can test for your LVN, then upgrade, but I do not know any details on how to do that. You might want to contact the CA BRN for more info.
Good Luck, Rick
