I thought it would be a good time to open a board on the upcoming changes to the program.

If you have questions pertaining to the changes this is the place to discuss them.

I will add category/boards to the forum on the new curriculum when more information becomes available.

Thanks

I have been thinking about getting into this program for the past few weeks.  Should I wait until the changes are made or get into the program before the changes.  I don't know what they are changing.  Any help would be great!!!!  Thanks.

Here is a link to the information form Excelsior for prospective students.

LINK

Read through that information and base your decision on what you can accomplish in the time frame.

Note the additional class and clinical.

We also have to bear in mind that, even if we're enrolled before October 1, if we don't finish Nursing Concepts 1 through 7 by September 30, 2009, we're subject to the new curriculum. I plan on being done by December 2007, though!  Grin

I plan on keeping up with you so hopefully I will be done before December this year as well. I just heard on one of the yahoo groups that florida is not going to allow non-lpn canidates to sit for the RN boards any longer. Excelsior is trying to work out a grandfather clause, but to no success of yet. It seems to be a trend and we need to get finished asap. I know in Georgia here they will not let Excelsior students sit for the boards. But, I will go to NY if I have too and recip back into the state.

Yeah, I'd hate to get a message that all my studying was for nothing ... so I'm going to power on through this stuff! I hate it when things change mid-stream, it's not fair. I know the Maryland students have to finish by December 31st because of changes made by their BON. I'm in Virginia just next door, so I'm hoping nothing wacky happens here.

Nope, haven't heard of any changes in Texas -- the Lone Star State seems to be quite content with EC grads ... there are a few of you around here. Smiley

Hey Lisa I'm from VA too! I would be crushed if VA put some crazy rules in like that.  What's the deal?? Why are the states doing that?  Do they think we'll be "less of a nurse" if we do it this way?? If our local colleges etc would have a online program etc...then life would be easier.  I just can't quit my job and go back to school as much as I would like to.    I had a friend who said to me..." you're getting your nursing degree through the mail" I was quite offended by that comment.  I told her I would be working dang hard for this and would be no less of a RN than she is now.  Oh well....whatever Smiley People will always find ways to put other down I guess Smiley Let's just hope VA holds tight and doesn't make any rule changes on us

For the states that aren't accepting EC, it seems to come down to clinicals, period. Which seems strange to me, because in talking with RNs who were medics first, paramedic clinicals are about the same (if not better) than the nursing clinicals one gets at a traditional school. I came out of medic school with much more hands-on experience than the new grads we're seeing at the ED. I know the focus isn't quite the same with RN vs. medic, but my precepter at the hospital for about a bazillion hours (felt like it, anyway) was an RN, so guess what? We did tons of nursing stuff as well as the more technical tasks. Maybe all programs aren't like mine, but the paramedic program is pretty standardized, and you end up with probably about 500 hours of hospital clinical time.
