I was EMS back when it was an 81 hour course!
Careful Becky -- You are showing your age (I too am an 81 hour course medic).  LOL

I have probably been a Paramendic for at least as long as anyone else here, ( I just had my 30th yr. anniversary, OMG!), but I don't remember any 80 hr. or so Paramedic course. (Pls correct me if I am wrong!).  They said "EMS", perhaps talking about an EMT or Advaced First Aid Course? .  When I started in EMS, the only requrement to staff an ambulance was that at least one of the people had to be an EMT.  (And THAT was an improvement, prior to that, it was just Advanced First Aid).  Does anyone else have some "back in the day .." stories?

Rick

Hello all. Just found this web site.. I am about to start the Bridge Road to RN.. Im a very old dog.. I have been on the street since 1973. I have done the VOL., Private,( Paid Fire/Ems), Medevac Medic, Speciality Tech Teams.[ Underwater and Shift Water, Confined space,Trench, and Rope/Vertical ],  Gig.  and Now I am working in a small clinic in Alaska. Working as a RN but not getting paid as a RN. My skill sets require taking x-rays, drawing then running all Labs, running the after hours Pharmacy,Triage and all Patient care skills needed in a ER. I am in charge of all airway skills including running the vent ,setting up and giving all the drugs. As well as ordering all the medical supplies for the clinic and keeping them working..and get this.. I applied to be a  VOL. at the local FIRE/EMS DEPT.  and they turned me down.. go fig.. ??   I Retired in 2005 but decided I needed to keep my mind busy and I really always wanted to get this RN done. I am working in the RN role so I might as well get paid for it. Alaska allows Paramedic to do more than any other place I have ever worked. My standing orders look like a P.A's . I can do chest tubes and surgical airways. But I make 10 dollars a hour less than a RN.. With all these skill sets I want to get paid my worth. and I want to have more options .. Im so looking forward to getting started.. and Yes you can teach old dogs new tricks.. or at least that is my hope.. any tips to pass along would be Nice.

I was a military medic for 10 years, a street medic for 10 years, jail medic for 1, and now work in the ER as a paramedic in Austin.  I work in the only urban hospital that uses paramedics.  We essentially replaced the LVN ranks when management started looking for individuals who had the critical care and independent thinking processes to work in a high volume, high acuity ED.

Our paramedics are essentially RNs.  There is very little difference and most are only black and white print in a P&P manual.  We can cover each other's shifts as well.  Our charting is slightly different than an RN and they technically are the only one's who can reconstitute medications.  They hold their own license and we work under the physician's licenses.  It is a really really good environment.  I have performed more medicine in the ER that I did in all of my EMS years.

I have started the ECRN bridge program so that I can get paid the same as my RN counterparts, which is really only a few dollars more than I currently earn.  While RN wages might not be the highest here, there are extraordinary opportunities for RNs who were ED medics and have the that experience moving into the RN career pool.

I don't miss the field.  Sometimes I miss the autonomy, but not the elements or the sometimes maligned professionalisms.

Going back to school however has been incredible difficult and finding a rythm to studying has escaped me.  I have no excuses though, my wife is an FNP, my kids are grown up, and I work three days a week.  So, any amount of encouragement you can send my way would be greatly appreciated.  Good luck to all who are in the program and yes, if you're in the Austin area, or if you'd just like to partner up online, I can use a study partner anytime.
