How many Medics do we have here?

Why the jump to Nursing?

I am fire based and work 24 on 72 off so Nursing would make a great second career/part-time job.

I figured, i don't want to be 50 years old pullin' some drunk out of the car at 3am;) but i will always play on the ambulance since it's my first love. Where are you a medic? I'm in Knoxville Tn. right now, but getting ready to move
to south carolina to be with my fiance.....that's why excelsior's so great, i can finish school anywhere.

I'm a medic (volunteer) in Front Royal, Virginia -- it's about 50 miles west of DC. I'm planning on keeping my EMT-P after I finish -- I love being a medic, but I also love working in the ER -- that's why I'm back in school!  Grin

I also work in an ED as a medic.

Just curious -- are you actually enabled to function as a medic in the ED? As in, give medications and do assessments? Where I work, I'm a little more limited in my scope -- no meds, no assessing, no doing triage. I do a lot of IVs and EKGs, and general patient care.

I can do triage, IV's, blood draws, EKG's, foley's, fiberglass splints, crutch training, most other splints, can give drugs in a code, but mosly I stock and transport pts to CAT scan, X-ray and the floor.  They call us in when a nurse calls off to do triage.  Everyone knows I'm in school so I try to observe everything I can.  Some of the residents have let me staple and do a dental block.  Since we can do all those things, some of the nurses have become lazy and basically only do assessments and give drugs.  Sometimes their assessments are what I tell them after I've triaged the pt.  Great experience.

Yeah, I do lots of splints (3M Orthoglass) and crutch training, and who can forget all the Foleys? Hee hee! I also do a lot of outpatient labs (we have to do those on weekdays, they can be a pain because the ER patients have to come first, so the outpatients get pushed back).

I've removed sutures, but that's about it ... I'd love to try suturing/stapling, but I'd get in trouble if I did that.

All the RNs I work with are great -- they pass on little tricks and tips all the time, and they don't mind when I ask questions. A lot of them tell me I know more than they do, ha ha!!

I am a paramedic, (obviously, from my handle!  Smiley ). I just joined the group, and have been a Paramedic in CA for , well, let's just say a long time!  I love my job, but realize that I can not do it forever! Also, I recognize the many doors that will be open once I get my RN!  Looking forward to chatting with all of you, and helping each other out!

Hey all,
I'm a FF/pmdc from metro atlanta.  I've been a medic in 2 states (north and south) for 11 years.  I've noticed that alot of my peers either went to med school or PA school.  We'll I don
t have enough time or money to do either.  I was in nursing school for my BSN before I became a medic.  Since I don't want to be bouncing around a ambulance or fire truck till I'm 55, nursing seems like my next career.  I'm taking my microbiology now and I can't seem to get into the grove of studying.  Anyone have any guides or CLEP info for passing it?  Thanks for the help.
