Just wondering what others are using as far as study materials. I get the feeling on a lot of the Yahoo groups that people are trying to get by only studying others' posted notes, and I really don't think that's a good idea. But that's just me ... I'm kind of a dork like that. Smiley

I'm using TCN for A&P, Micro, and Sociology. I have Chancellor's guides for NC1 through NC7 (although I don't have NC7 yet, but have an arrangement to buy it when another student is done with it), as well as Life Span. I bought all of them on eBay. I like both TCN and Chancellor's, but the real advantage I see to Chancellor's is the audio component -- the older guides come with cassette tapes and the new ones come with CDs. (All mine are the older ones with tapes, unfortunately for me... I actually had to buy a portable cassette player so I could play them in my car!) I have a long-ish commute to work (about an hour), so I love being able to do something productive while I drive! Smiley

Hi Lisa,

I have the Chancellor's A&P guide on the way(tapes) and hope to get it today.

I think you are correct about the notes, you really need some other material to study.  One may be able to get by on just the notes but I would like to learn more than just is needed to pass the test.

Having Ebay and Half.com makes it very cheap to get these materials used and then to resell when you are finished.

There is an easy way to convert the tapes to CD.  I bought a cable from radio shack and used a free program called audacity.  It's pretty easy.  Do a google search on it.  Takes a little time since the tapes have to play regular speed as they are recorded by your computer, but it's easy.

I am using TCN study guides I purchased almost a year ago.  I wish I had done more research about other options in getting books through Ebay and such.  I would have saved a bucket load of money.  I am just now starting to study the material.  I am beginning with NC1 and see how I do.  I have not enrolled with EC yet but plan on it before Oct. '07 before they change their requirements.

Ha! Dude, I have a bunch of VINYL! As in albums.  Grin

Welcome, Sylvia! (Good grief, I almost typed "saliva" ... time for some sleep.) Like a fool, I enrolled in Excelsior this past July, not realizing I could take a bunch of classes before doing so. Whoops. Oh well ... live and learn.

LOL....Actually you wouldn't be the first to type that one.  Most people spell my name "Slyvia".

I also used Chancellor's for all 7 nps and life span, passed all except 5-I then supplemented a little especially with sample test like the Seth that I found in files at some of the other study groups on yahoo and then passed 5 easily.  I found the more I practice tested, the better I did.    Ebay is a great place to look for used resources.

Hi Linda,
I have tapes for everything except NC 7, CD's for that one and I am not planning to sell anything until I make sure I don't need anything while studying for the NCLEX.  When I get ready to sell, I will let you know!

Hi, I'm new to this board and Excelsior, I've been an LPN for 3 yrs. and can't wait to get my RN.  I'd like to know if there is a way to buy Lisa Arends Notes any other way than through ebay (bad experiences).  I would also like to know if anyone has used just the EC study guides and practice tests for the examinations.  The Saunders NCLEX was my study guide through LPN school, any help would be appreciated.

The only place Lisa sells her notes is on eBay. There is a discussion in a forum further down on this site -- she's currently not selling some of her notes due to EC having the auctions pulled. She's working on getting them back out there, though. She's a fabulous seller -- quick to ship. I'm sure she'd be a good eBay experience for you!

The EC study guides are more of an outline than actual information ... I'm not sure the guides alone, even with the practice tests, would be enough for a C or better. Some people have been using the Saunders NCLEX-RN guide to study, so that would be good. I like using a variety of materials to learn as much as I can about each topic. I bought the EC recommended text used on half.com or amazon.com, can't remember which, but I paid $13 for it. Well worth it!

Good luck, and welcome to the board! Smiley

Lisa,

Did you buy all of the texts that EC reccomends or just the fundamentals book when you were preparing for NC 1. I bought 2 books and the yahoo study group guide just not sure if I should buy the other books.

Thanks

What is the yahoo study group guide? I'm not familiar with that one.

For NC1, I had just the Chancellor's guide. I didn't have Lisa's notes until 2 days before I tested, so I really didn't get much of a chance to study from those. I also didn't purchase Kozier's Fundamentals of Nursing until I was studying for NC2. After not feeling entirely prepared for all the questions on NC1, I decided Chancellor's alone wasn't going to get me the A grade that I wanted! Smiley
