Could anyone tell me if they have researched to see if hospitals in their states hire nurses with Excelsior degrees?  I recently had an interview in Wisconsin for a paramedic position and mentioned I am going through Excelsior for my RN.  The woman who interviewed me told me she did not think their company hired from that program due to lack of clinicals.  Anyone had problems with this?  If anyone knows someone or who has graduated from Excelsior and works at a hospital in Wisconsin, please post here or email me.  I am very concerned and do not want to continue with this program if I can't find a job after I graduate!  I am going to research further, but before in enrolled, I called a few hospitals and asked about hiring grads from Excelsior and they didn't really give me a straight answer.  I currently function as a nurse in my job now and hope that experience, and maybe a nurse extern program where I work now, will help me get hired at another hospital.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a standing offer from my nurse manager to work as an RN when I finish -- I'm in Virginia. With the nursing shortage, I don't see how people can really turn RNs down -- if the state BON says it's okay, that should be good enough. But I can see why you're being cautious.

Three of my coworkers are now doing RN-BSN and RN-MSN with Excelsior. We're big fans of EC where I work. Smiley

I am not certain about Wisconsin, but with all the places there you can do the CPNE I would think they would hire.  Also...my neice was from Iowa (very strict state for nursing) and she got her RN and then Master's through distance learning.  She now works for Mayo in Mn.....and has gone on to get her PA with no problems going from distance grad to traditional college.  All nursing was accepted toward her PA.  Before going on for the PA she worked surgery/cardiology as an RN.

I also know that in Texas they accept distance learning...especially because the RN was already an LVN with clinical practice prior to the additional study....and was able to pass the NCLEX.

I'm in TX, I haven't heard of that either.  But, I would be quick to mention that this program is recognized by the NLN and the "only" RN distance program recognized by the state boards here.  I don't see that there is going to be a problem, when you pass your boards..... well?Huh?  They can always offer an extended orientation if they are worried about it.  And how much independence can you give a fresh out of school RN anyway?  I think we are WAY more qualified and DISCIPLINED than the traditional students who have no prior experience!

I am in VA and the hospital that I work at is very supportive (actually reimburse me 80% of tuition for 1 year of service).  They plan to just transfer me to a RN position.  I have noticed at some of the surrounding hospitals, they offer an internship for new nurses.   Something to check in to.

Sara,
I'm a new LPN from southeastern Ohio, and was advised recently that the hospitals in our town would not hire grads of Excelsior. It has been difficult getting a clear answer from HR of these facilities, but their main concern is the same you listed: number of Clinicals.

I still applied to Excelsior and hope to complete the program by this time '08. Worst case, I'll have to make a longer commute to find an employer that will accept my credentials.
